In San Diego there are approximately 7,000 kids in the foster care system. On average 200-300 kids are forced to leave foster care upon their 18th birthday each year, and statistics show that over 50% will become homeless within one year. Hundreds of other children not in the system despite being abandoned, abused and discarded by society find themselves living on the streets at age 18 with nowhere to turn for help. And while there are several shelters throughout San Diego, none offer specific services to these teens.

We’re going to mobilize the San Diego community and create a safe place for these kids to go at night – we’re going to build a shelter. It’s certainly not a complete solution for all of the abandoned children on the street, but it’s a start. Stay Classy has partnered with GreenHouse and San Diego Youth Services on this Campaign for Abandoned Children. Our goal is to raise $500,000 to establish this shelter facility…yes, that’s half a million dollars. Certainly a big step, but one that our members feel passionate about, and one the community has a responsibility to address.

GreenHouse is fundamentally involved in building this much-needed shelter for San Diego, and is exploring the possibilities of expanding this effort to other cities in need across the southwestern United States. The most critical need is for a home for these children; however, GreenHouse is also committed to constructing this shelter with the latest in green building technology, creating a sustainable future for these youth and the personnel that serve them. Utilizing our own products, services, know-how, and employees, GreenHouse is leading the way and setting an example for how sustainable building is not the way of the future, it is the cost-effective and responsible methodology to build now.
